Bio

I'm Siji Bernita (she/they), a multidisciplinary artist and first-generation Ecuadorian migrant, currently based in Amsterdam after several years in Barcelona. Under my project MonoMonitos, I create clay bodies inspired by my trans reality, expanding ceramics into other forms of expression such as photography and performance.

My work draws from my origins and identity to explore the experiences of diasporic, trans, and POC bodies, as well as the dynamics they encounter when creating, existing, and occupying spaces. From a hopeful perspective, I seek to embrace historically excluded identities and explore the possibilities that exist beyond a cis-patriarchal society.

I reimagine clay as an open door to new ways of conceiving the body: an element that comes from the earth and, at the same time, a body that functions as an extension of my own.
